Rowing is just as much a mental game as it is physical. Getting on the erg or into the boat and pushing through pain is never easy, and how you approach that challenge often makes the difference between good and great. At NextStroke, we guide you to think differently about training, helping you reframe each session as an opportunity to get stronger, faster, and more confident. Our coaching provides strategies to manage discomfort, stay focused, and embrace the grind, so even the toughest workouts feel purposeful. We show you how to prepare mentally, build resilience, and step into each session with clarity and confidence. By teaching mental approaches alongside physical training, NextStroke turns tough sessions into growth opportunities, helping you feel capable, push your limits, and achieve real results.
Even the smallest mistake off the water can silently sabotage your speed, energy, and results, making every choice outside of training just as critical as the work you do on the boat or erg. Rowing is demanding, and success requires making the right choices day in and day out, not just on the water or erg. Through years of trial and error, our team has developed a system that gives rowers clear expectations for preparation and recovery, so every session leads to real improvement. This includes guidance on nutrition, sleep, workout timing, and recovery strategies, all designed to support peak performance. When these elements are optimized, you can focus entirely on rowing, confident that your body and mind are fully prepared. With the right preparation and recovery plan in place, tough workouts become manageable, your energy and strength are maximized, and your progress becomes consistent, measurable, and sustainable. At NextStroke, we take care of the details outside of rowing so you can concentrate on one thing: rowing faster.
Execution is what ultimately determines results. The truth is, most athletes aren’t executing their workouts correctly. Warmups are inadequate, sessions are too short or too long, foundational steady state work is mismanaged, high intensity efforts are often done incorrectly, and more. Our plan is built to prevent burnout, injury, and wasted effort. At NextStroke, we make sure you understand the purpose behind every stroke and every workout. There is intent in everything you do, and losing sight of that can have serious consequences. As my former coach would say, every session is “putting money in the bank,” and on race days or erg tests, he would tell us to “withdraw.” His training plan was designed to set us up for success when it mattered most, and at NextStroke, we want to do the same. We meet you in the middle, guiding your training so you perform at your peak when it matters most.
